Director & Founder Chris Bennett Says Goodbye to Newspace

Dear Friends,

After 12 years at Newspace, I will be leaving my administrative role at the Center in October to pursue new adventures in my photographic career.

As many of you know, in 2012 I moved to part time after returning to school to receive my MFA in Photography. At that point we hired Tricia Hoffman as our Executive Director to lead the organization. Moving forward I am excited to become more involved teaching classes at Newspace and will maintain my involvement with the board of directors.

There have been too many highlights during my time at Newspace to recount them all, but it has truly been an amazing journey and a period of my life that I will never forget. The Center’s growth would have never been possible without the support of our vibrant photo community and all of the dedicated, hardworking staff, volunteers and board members throughout the years.

I am happy to hand off my facilities management responsibilities to the very capable Brittany Chavez, our new Facilities Manager. In addition, we are excited to launch our first Kickstarter Campaign to help Newspace to hire a curator. I hope you will support this effort to further grow the organization.

Thank you for your support of Newspace and for making my time here so memorable. I hope that those of you who value the unique creative and intellectual space that Newspace provides will continue your engagement and support.

In the Gallery – Wait Watchers by Haley Morris-Cafiero

On Display: September 5-28th  | Opening Reception: Friday, September 5th,  6-9pm
Free Artist Lecture: Saturday, Septmber 6th, 1-2pm

Newspace Center for Photography is excited to present the exhibitions Wait Watchers by Memphis, TN-based photographer Haley Morris-Cafiero.

Haley Morris-Cafiero captures images of herself posed in public spaces at moments when others seem to respond to her presence. These interactions suggest she is the object of the other’s gaze, but are ambiguous in their meaning. The resulting images allow the viewer to contemplate the ways in which we react to and interact with strangers in the social environment.

Haley Morris-Cafiero is a photographer based in Memphis. Haley received her MFA in Art from the University of Arizona and her BFA in Ceramics and BA in Photography from University of North Florida. She is currently an Associate Professor and Head of the Photography Department at Memphis College of Art.
