April is Portland Photo Month and NEWSPACE is celebrating with a focus on the Portrait!
The rich history – and present state – of portraiture aligns seamlessly with that of photography, making it a timely and intriguing subject to examine during Portland Photo Month. Newspace will kick off the month with an exhibition by local artist Jake Shivery, whose series of black-and-white portraits at once communicate personal relationships and the character of an extensive community. Related events will provide insight into Jake’s particular process and thoughts on portraiture (see below for complete details). In April, three classes with portrait-making at their core begin, and several more will follow in May and June. Our programmatic focus will close with the popular Tintype Portrait Session, where we return to one of the original methods used to normalize the practice of portraiture.
From daguerreotypes to selfies and beyond—we hope you join us in exploring this theme!
