OFFSITE: Organizing the Unorganized: Galvanizing Cultural Workers
November 12, 2016 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
Join us on Saturday, November 12, 11am at PNCA (511 NW Broadway) for a public discussion on organizing cultural workers around labor conditions in the arts. Members of the collective Art Handlers’ Alliance of New York (AHA-NY), Stephen Sewell and James Whitman, will survey a brief history of artists’ labor activism from the early twentieth century to now, and recent labor organization efforts by art handlers around the country leading up to the formation of the first ever freelance art handlers union in New York in 2015.
The presentation will be followed by an open discussion using AHA-NY’s efforts as a case study to consider the challenges of galvanizing unorganized groups of workers (i.e. non-union), and some methods to bringing about better working conditions in the culture industry and beyond.
Please note this discussion does NOT take place at Newspace.
This discussion is held in conjunction with Hidden Assembly, a group exhibition featuring projects that examine what it means to work in current times. This exhibition will be jointly on view at Newspace’s gallery and PNCA’s Innovation Lab from November 4, 2016 to January 7, 2017.
