OFFSITE discussion: ‘Our City in Stereo: Eastside’ at the Rosewood Intiative
August 27, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Join us at The Rosewood Initiative (16126 SE Stark St.) for an evening showcasing East Portland creativity and organizing–shining a light on an often-overlooked artistic community, which creates work in an area with limited resources and opportunities for artists to thrive and develop their craft. This event is organized in partnership with the art collective The Numbers Music Project, a group of young East Portland-raised creatives brought together to empower and provide opportunities to artists in their neighborhood.
Featured artists will include Rockwood music group OBX Empire, a group that brings insight to the struggles and ambitions of growing up in a rough neighborhood; and Reel Music, a Southeast group with a foundation of telling the other side of the Portland story. The local photographer Chino. Pics will create an enveloping photography installation that will show the Portland that is sometimes forgotten and set a memorable tone to the night. This night will not only serve as an opportunity for artists to exhibit the art and culture thriving in East Portland, but also for the audience to hear their stories through music.
The Number Music Project is a collective of young artists who share the goal of building more opportunities for themselves and their community. Founded by Jason Ornelas-Montes, a recording artist in several projects and his younger brother Aaron Ornelas-Montes, a young music producer and director of The Touri$t music collective, the project brings more attention to the creativity in the Eastside.
This event is organized in partnership with Newspace Center for Photography and c3:initiative, and is taking place in conjunction with artist Sharita Towne’s current exhibition, Our City in Stereo (on view at Newspace July 29 – October 1).
