Workshop with Allie Hankins: Small Gestures Doing Big Things
May 6 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
In this hour long workshop led by Allie Hankins we will mine our body language and gestures as a means of examining scale, communication, understanding, and stylization. Durational exercises, writing, and vocalizing will also be used to support our body language studies.
Examine existing patterns.
Subvert them if desired / if necessary.
Attempt to map pathways between points:
Celebratory ——–> conversational
Ecstatic ———> pragmatic
Use repetition as familiarization / as disorientation
Think of a word said over and over, and how edges of meanings softening.
How your voice and shape of your lips become profound and peculiar.
Now try it with your body language.
This workshop is being held in conjunction with Dominant Form: Gestures in Recent Photography and Video, a group exhibition examining the various ways in which physical gestures serve as reflections of broader cultural narratives.
