Newspace Artist in Residence 2012 & 2013

We are no longer accepting submission for our Artist in Residence program.  We hope to continue offering this opportunity in the future.  To stay updated please sign up for our email newsletter.

Six photographers will be selected for one-month residencies at Newspace Center for Photography. The program is intended to support talented, self-directed emerging/mid-career photographers in realizing their artistic goals and visions. Resident artists will also serve as a source of inspiration and guidance for the many students and beginning photographers who create and learn at the Center.

Each monthlong residency includes a $2,000 stipend, access to the Center’s darkroom, lighting studio, and digital lab facilities during our business hours. Residents will also be awarded a $500 in-house credit to be used towards digital printing costs (covers per print charges). Paper and film are not provided. Travel and housing costs are the responsibility of the resident. We are currently working to secure affordable housing for out of town residents, details forthcoming.

Once the six residencies are complete we will be printing a catalog featuring each photographer and their work.

Applicants should submit proposals outlining project plans and goals. Projects may involve the continuation/completion of work already in process, or may be the creation of new work. Upon completion of the residency, artists will be asked to provide an artists lecture at the Center and donate one print to the print collection. We will be accepting applications beginning February 1st 2012 until the six residents have been selected and posted here on our website.

Required Application Materials:

          • Letter of proposal (one page).
          • Resume/CV
          • Artist’s statement (one page).
          • CD with 20 jpegs of work related to the intended project, or recent work if applying for a new project. No slides or original artwork please.
          • Supplementary materials such as magazine/newspaper reviews, or printed materials may also be included, if relevant.
          • Self addressed, stamped envelope if you wish to have your materials returned, otherwise we will discard them.

Board Position Available

The Newspace Board of Directors is currently seeking a new member. The prospective board member should have non-profit and fundraising experience, enthusiasm for the arts, and a desire to contribute to the strength of the organization.

Each member is expected to work between board meetings on activities related to Newspace’s mission. What a board member does in this area is largely self-determined, based on individual skill sets and interests. S/he should also be able and willing to work collaboratively with other members of the board and advocate for Newspace broadly in the community. Board members are also asked to maintain an annual membership with the Center at a personally meaningful level.

Board positions require a commitment of one to two years of service. Members are required to attend and participate actively in monthly board meetings, which are typically held on third Thursdays from 7-9pm.

Resumes and cover letters may be sent to Chris Bennett, Executive Director, at chris@newspacephoto.org or by mail at 1632 SE 10th Ave., Portland, OR 97214.
