Beginning Darkroom

The next two classes start Monday, May 7th & Monday, June 4th.

This hands-on class covers beginning black and white darkroom techniques for film photographers. You’ll learn how to process your own film and make enlargements in the traditional wet darkroom. By the end of class, you’ll be well-versed in the use of contrast filters and burning and dodging, and will be making beautiful prints of your own.

Tuition includes unlimited access to the Newspace darkroom for the month. Students must have SLR cameras with shutter speed and aperture controls to take this class. The Manual Mode is a recommended prerequisite. Students should bring cameras and a roll of exposed film to the first class. Newspace has loaner SLR film cameras you can borrow for the month, just give us a call!

Bob Farr has been working with black & white photography for the past 35 years and with large format cameras for 20 years. He has a degree in photography from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield MO. Bob was a middle school art teacher for 26 years before moving to Portland. He enjoys traveling around the region with his large format cameras – photographing the simple beauty of the landscape, as well as the arrangement of forms in the man-made world. His darkroom and studio are located in Kelso, WA.

 

Laura Valenti Jelen is the Program Director of Newspace Center for Photography. She also teaches traditional black and white darkroom classes and leads Portlanders on photography field trips. Laura co-curates the gallery for Newspace, and juries widely for photography competitions and exhibitions. She also serves regularly as a portfolio reviewer at review events such as Photolucida and Review Santa Fe. Her own work is in the collection at the Museum of Contemporary Photography. Outside of photography, Laura is also a half-marathon running mentor for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program. Her degree is from Reed College.
