$675
Free Lecture & Book Signing:
Thursday, February 2nd 7pm
This retreat-style workshop is a unique opportunity to rejuvenate your creative spirit as you explore landscape photography on a deeper level. As a highly respected artist and educator, Douglas Beasley has a unique talent for helping others to find their creative voice. The weekend will include active photographic and visual exercises to expand the creative growth of workshop participants. You’ll work with your own cameras and choice of medium as you learn to explore visual aesthetics and create more personally meaningful images. During this time you will focus on your needs and desires for artistic growth, examining all aspects of your creative process. The workshop will include reviews of student work and photographic exploration in the lovely area just west of Mt. Hood.
The workshop will be held at Hidden Lake Retreat, a beautiful woodland retreat center just 45 minutes from Portland. The workshop experience will be enhanced by the serenity of the lake and surrounding forest, and the full amenities available, including three healthy, gourmet meals each day, comfortable lodging, and a sauna. Participants may also schedule massage or other healing sessions while at Hidden Lake—the perfect location for relaxing and tuning in to your creative voice.
Register for this workshop at least one month prior to the start date. Withdrawls or refunds must have at least 30 days’ notice. There are no exceptions. If a class is cancelled, Newspace will refund only the class fee, not travel or hotel expenses. Newspace is not responsible for and will not refund any non-tuition expenses for any reason.
Special Exhibition
This workshop includes a special exhibition opportunity for students. A curated show of student work will be presented in Newspace’s Special Exhibitions Gallery in March 2012.
Who Should Attend
The workshop will emphasize personal expression and creative vision over the mechanics of camera use. However, students should have a good working knowledge of their cameras and a desire to take their image-making to a deeper level.
Lodging & Details
Lodging must be paid for separately. Newspace Program Director Laura Valenti Jelen will contact you to discuss lodging options and to reserve your room after November 15th. Participants interested in purchasing a massage session while at Hidden Lake should arrange this with Laura.
About
Douglas Beasley’s personal vision explores the spiritual aspects of people and place and is concerned with how the sacred is recognized and expressed in everyday life. He hopes that his photographs act as prayer-like offerings and as a departure point for the viewer’s own visual or spiritual journey. Much of his work, including “Sacred Sites of the Lakota,” “Disappearing Green Space,” “Silent Witness: Genocide and the Landscape,” “Sacred Places” and “Earth Meets Spirit” are supported by grants and have been widely exhibited and collected. Douglas’ first book, Japan: A Nisei’s First Encounter, offers insight into his journey to his mother’s homeland. His second book, Earth Meets Spirit was published in 2011. He leads workshops in Santa Fe, Hawaii, Guatemala, Peru, Japan, China, Italy, Africa, and Bali as well as in his retreat center in Wisconsin. Douglas continues to explore the notion of what is sacred in his photography and in his life. When not out traveling the world, he can be found tending his Japanese gardens or enjoying a strong cup of coffee while listening to loud music. To see his work, go to: www.douglasbeasley.com.
