Exploring the Abstract
Level 2-4
From macro shots of urban oddities, to stylistic images of the curve of a shoulder, drifting sand dunes, or the interplay of light and shadow, an attention to the abstract underlies some of the most powerful pictures. In this class, you’ll learn how a strong focus on form, pattern, lines, and angles can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. This class is a chance to delve into the purely visual side of photography, to fine-tune your photographic seeing, and to challenge your expectations about what makes a great shot.
Class will include slide-shows, in-depth discussions on the abstract vision in photography, review of student images, and unique assignments designed to get you shooting more creatively.
Students should bring three prints and cameras.
Born and raised in Boston, TJ Norris has been a Northwest-based multidisciplinary artist since 2001. He often splits his creative time as an accomplished contemporary art curator and cultural writer/music journalist. Since the 1990′s, Norris has presented his work throughout North America, Sweden, and the U.K. Often referred to as both ascetic and minimal, his work is often photo-based, though it has also been composed from installation, video, sculpture, drawing, and numerous collaborative projects. Inspired by the most minor alterations to catastrophic change within our ecosphere, his subject matter plays on depth of field and meaning.
