Fine Art of Digital Printing

Level 2-4

In this class, fine-art photographer Ron Kaplan will introduce you to the wide world of digital printing techniques and discuss different tools and methods for making your prints shine. You’ll get to work hands-on with your own images as you learn to gain tonal control and make prints that match your monitor and your artistic vision. You’ll also have a chance to work with some of the finest quality digital papers available, so you can better decide which materials to use with your own work. You’ll leave class with a greater understanding of fine-art digital printing techniques and some beautiful prints to show for your efforts.

Students may use the digital lab for five hours free of charge during their enrollment.

Required prerequisite: Basic Photoshop (not Photoshop Elements) or instructor’s consent.

Over the years Ron Kaplan has had a few careers: lawyer; contractor; student chef; lawyer again; and winery owner. Throughout that time he’s always been a photographer. In fact, Kaplan has been taking pictures for 50 years or so, ever since his grandfather gave him his first camera, an Agfa Plenax PB 20, a bellows camera. Ron has had darkrooms for both color and black and white for over 30 years, until 1999 when he went digital. Ron has taught digital fine-art printing techniques at Portland Community College and at Newspace since 2007.
