John Wimberley – Sight & Insight
Level 2-4
The foundation of photography is seeing. It is the job of the photographic artist to see through surfaces to the significance and meaning within. While equipment and technique have their place, the quality and depth of the photographer’s perception determine whether each picture reaches its highest potential. In this workshop, acclaimed fine-art photographer John Wimberley will present an alternative model for finding pictures in the world around you. You’ll learn how to approach your subject without preconceptions and with greater sensitivity. John will discuss the important roles of peripheral vision, seeing with “soft eyes,” and responding intuitively, rather than intellectually, to one’s environment.
This class will also include a look at cultural conditioning, the vocabulary used to describe the act of making pictures, and the rich language of visual symbolism. Because all parts of the body and psyche are interconnected when creating art, this class will also explore the importance of energy level, posture, and breathing.
Students should bring three prints.
