When you find yourself, you find your vision. This workshop is a journey of self-discovery and visual exploration with fine-art photographer Elizabeth Opalenik. The workshop will focus on getting to the heart of your subject, and connecting with your own personal beauty and unique vision. You’ll learn to use this visual voice to express a deeper relationship to your subject, be it a person, object, or moment in time. Considering that all good photographs are self-portraits, you’ll learn to create images that tell stories and how to creatively express thoughts, feelings, and life experiences through metaphor. Class will focus on bringing a more nuanced awareness to image-making – going beyond the simple facts of a scene and into the realm of imagination and possibility.
You’ll have a chance to work with models and dancers as you look to the environment for inspiration. You’ll explore the ethereal quality of infrared, the grace of movement, sensual imagery, and the honesty of the self-portrait. By taking new risks and being willing to fail, you’ll be rewarded with new ideas, new paths, and a newfound passion that lasts beyond the first glance.
Students should bring a body of work to share and discuss.

About
Elizabeth Opalenik is regarded as one of the most creative photographers teaching today. She is known for her sensual images, including work in the Mordançage process, handpainted black and white, infrared films, Polaroid manipulations and specialized toning. With limitless creativity Elizabeth has found her voice as a photographic artist, learning that all good photographs are self-portraits that lie somewhere between imagination and dreams.
As Elizabeth says, “from portraits to landscapes, our images are stepping stones that trace where the mind has been and form the unique vision each of us carries through life.” Elizabeth teaches that by revealing ourselves, we discover new ways of seeing. Her desire is to respond to the light and to the essence of the subject of her images, creating a lasting yet momentous representation of a lifetime of moments and experience.
Her work is collected and exhibited in museum, gallery, and private collections internationally. A sought-after educator, she teaches international workshops privately on the figure, portraiture, and alternative processes and has been teaching multiple workshops more than 25 years in conjunction with The Maine Media Workshops, The Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, and National Geographic Expeditions among others.
